Derby put last week's nightmare display
against Matlock behind them to record a massive win against Moderns (who
bizarrely managed to beat Matlock 2 weeks ago!). In excellent conditions Derby
were soon in command winning plenty of possession, even a few scrums against the
head with Moderns driven back. First to score was Ryan Milton out wide, followed
by Dan Hutchinson under the posts. Derby's rugby league centres, Jon Cartlidge
and James Turner were making good headway in the centre and in this period Derby
spurned a few chances. Then debutant scrum half Max Rawlinson grabbed a brace of
tries, Sam Hobbs finished of some excellent interplay between the forwards, the
ball going through 5 or 6 players after a scrum with well-timed offloads keeping
the move going. Jon Cartlidge had to leave the pitch to protect a knee injury
replaced by Joe Stead. James Turner scored a good try showing strong running and
good pace and then straight from the kick-off (caught for once) the ball was
moved to Sam Hobbs on his own 10 metre line. Sam sprinted past weary defenders
and finally rounded the full back to score in the corner, then collapse in a
heap. Moderns heads were starting to drop and simple handling by Derby created
two more tries for Ryan and a first half hat-trick.
So 9 tries, 5 conversions by Hutch and one by Ryan, score 57 - 0 at half-time.
On came replacements Archer and Simon Jones, and Arch was soon punching holes
from the base of the scrum and had scored within 5 minutes. The forwards were
still winning loads of ball with Sherriff, Simon and Shane dominating the
line-out, it was just receiving the kick-offs that Derby were struggling with -
and they had plenty of practice! Two more tries from Ryan (did he buy his jug?)
a quick pair for Shane McDonald (improving with each game he plays), Callum
Martin leapt 'like a salmon!' to score under the posts and Arch grabbed another.
With the crowd calling for a cameo appearance from player / manager Dave Bussell
he did not disappoint as he replaced John Lewis with 15 minutes to go. You just
knew he was going to score and sure enough he appeared on Ryan's shoulder to
take a pass and scorch away under the posts. The ref took pity on Moderns and
blew up a few minutes early, with 5 more conversions from Hutch and one from
Ryan making the final score 109 - 0.
Special mention must go to vet Keith Mason-Moore for filling in at short notice.
Good to see Dave Goodman back in action, Matt Erwin contributed well to
excellent scrummaging, Jordan Hollis enjoyed an outing at blind side and another
newcomer Joe Stead slotted in nicely at centre, Liam Walter had several runs and
can't believe he didn't get a try and John Lewis looked comfortable in his
comeback after a hamstring injury. I think that is everybody mentioned - well
done the Beests!!
