A look back at our AGP Launch weekend

Even the weather was onside as the sun shone during the official opening of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) funded artificial grass pitch (AGP) at Derby RFC on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th April 2018. The pitch is part of the RFU’s commitment to invest £50m over four years into the development of 100 AGPs across England.  The new AGPs will provide the communities with year-round rugby which will enable additional training sessions and more flexibility in playing times due to the floodlights.  The AGP will also be available to hire to the wider sporting community which will have a positive impact on the local community and area.

On the 15th Anniversary of the Clubhouse’s Official opening, the celebrations and presentations of the opening day on Saturday also featured Derby RFC’s Vice President’s day and the club was a hive of activity both on and off the pitch.  The club were also presented with their RFU accreditation, recognising their high standard of management and governance within the game.

The programme throughout the weekend featured a large variety of rugby activity that was a real reflection of the rugby on offer at the club.  Future referees honed their skills with a Referees Course, the Club’s flagship side the 1st XV also hosted Nuneaton in the RFU Midlands Premier League with a Ladies Derby Vipers match following on against local rivals Amber Valley RFC.  The weekend also saw Colts players from Long Eaton, Melbourne and Amber Valley making the step up adult rugby in a development game.  These clubs are among those in the local area that make up the Local Rugby Partnership (LRP) who also have the opportunity to use this fantastic new facility.

The weekend concluded with the stars of the future, the Club’s Junior section, playing matches throughout Sunday morning and on Sunday afternoon an Inner Warrior Camp to help with the recruitment of Girls into the game.

Representing the Rugby Football Union on behalf of the President John Spencer was Tracy Edmundson, Tracy commented; ‘What a fantastic weekend to celebrate a new era for rugby in the local Derby area! It has been a privilege to enjoy the excellent variety of the game and we look forward to seeing the local area flourish with the use of this excellent new facility’.

Derby RFC offer rugby opportunities for all ages and levels from Girls and Boys aged 6 through to the Senior Men’s and Ladies teams.
