The Derby RFC Ladies and Derby RFC Vets teams
were presented with awards by RFUW President Gill Burns MBE.
Also present at the Award evening was Derby Mayor Councillor
Pauline Latham.
The Derby RFC Ladies' section has won a
prestigious national award less than a year after its
formation. They were presented with the Rugby Football
Union's President's award in recognition of the work they
have done in promoting the women's game over the past 12
months. They beat 21 other teams who entered, including
Derby men's Vets side, who were named runners-up.
In their first season, the ladies won six of their nine
games and will be eligible to enter a league next term.
Under-15 and Under-18 sides have also been set up. Lisa
Miller, who plays for the team, is delighted at how the
squad has progressed. "I think it has been a surprise to
everyone how much interest we have had," said Miller. "I
used to work at the club and myself and another girl decided
to give it a go after seeing the training sessions. "That
was last August and here we are now. I was an absolute
beginner and had never picked up a ball before but I really
enjoy it. We all get on well and have built up a really
relationship on and off the pitch. Our captain, Claire
McGinley, didn't tell anyone that she had entered us for the
award. Then, she just announced that we had won at the end
of training. It is great that we have got a bit of
silverware already and let's hope there will be some more to
come. We have been playing sides who have been established
for several years and who play in the top division, so that
has been good preparation for us. The senior side has really
taken off and now we really want to push the junior side of
it and recruit more young players. There is no pressure to
play games. Some people just come and train with us to build
up their fitness or for the social side of it."
