Welcome to Derby Colts

Derby RFC has a long tradition in Colts rugby, having run a Colts team for over 50 years providing a steady flow of players into the senior teams and beyond.  In the last few years, over 20 Colts have moved on to play for the 1st XV.

This season Derby Colts will run just one team at under 18s. They will compete in the Saturday Colts Transition League and the National under 18s Colts Cup. With 26 League fixtures and some cup games there should be plenty of game time for all players.

The section’s vision is to inspire, develop and retain as many Colts as possible to become competent, safe and effective rugby players who are capable of playing and enjoying senior rugby in a sustainable manner while buying into the ethos and camaraderie of rugby football.

The aim of the coaching team in to develop young players in a safe, challenging and fun environment.
The section maintains and fosters close ties with the senior club. As the season progresses and as player abilities develop there will be opportunities to play up a level within the club.

Training takes place at Haslams every Tuesday and Thursday, commencing at 7.00 pm and finishing at 8.15 pm. Games will be played on Saturday afternoons.

The coaching team aims to develop players to ensure they have the requisite core skills and decision-making ability to help them progress to senior rugby.

While many players move to the Colts from the Junior section, we welcome all new players looking to develop their skills and progress their playing careers in a fun and challenging Colts set-up.

Our approach is based on individual long-term player development and we look to enjoy our achievements and improvements within a supportive team environment.

To achieve this our focus includes –
•    Enjoyable, stimulating and challenging learning within a game based approach.
•    Safety
•    Defence and tackling
•    Attack, catch, carry, pass and evasion
•    Decision making
•    Set piece
•    Team play and structure
•    Specialised individual skills
•    Strength and conditioning
