Derby took on high flying Luctonians at Haslams and welcomed Ryan Milton back to the side after a long injury break. Jake Barker made his first appearance for a while, from the bench. Sam Tebbs made his 100th appearance for the side.
The Derby faithful suspected that it would be a tough day and so it proved.Luctonians scored their first try after just 3 minutes and crossed the try line on a regular basis throughout the first half.
Just before the interval, Luctonians led 42 – 0, having scored 6 converted tries. At this stage, Derby hit back ! They kept the ball through a number of phases, before McGrath Van Wyk chipped through, gathered and scored his 8th try of the season. George Castledine converted and the half time score was 42 – 7 to Luctonians.
The 2nd half continued in much the same vein, with Luctonians scoring 4 more converted tries. This time, however, Derby managed to score twice ! With the score at 56 – 7, Louis Hicks burst over the line, to score. 15 minutes later, Derby stole a Luctonians line out and George Castledine forced his way through 2 tackles to touchdown; he then got up and converted.
The final whistle saw Derby well beaten, by an excellent side, with the defeat confirming Derby’s relegation. Derby showed tremendous spirit and tackled all day long in the face of overwhelming pressure. It doesn’t get much easier next week, when Derby travel to 3rd place Newport.
