Derby’s George Castledine manages to get the ball away as he’s tackled by the Newbold player

Match Report

It was the day that both Ben Marlow and Ben Marsden dominated play with running and passing at pace splitting the Newbold defence with relative ease.  In essence, Derby’s forwards won enough possession and the backs made good use of it.  Derby looked happier on the splendid new astro turf pitch, but conceding thirteen penalties could have cost them dearly especially as Newbold had the edge at the breakdowns.  Happily it was a day when Adam Parkins stepped up and led by example in the pack.  The acceleration of Sam Tebbs surprised the Newbold forwards showing he still has the speed from his time as a winger.  Ex Derby Colt. Josh Pearson got his first start and Sam Martin took the place of the injured Alex Taylorson.

However, their confidence was not dented when Newbold’s big pack drove prop, Ben Dawes, over in the corner after only three minutes.  Five minutes later a great long run by Ben Marlow was taken on by the pack and Louis Hicks touched down to level the scores.  George Castledine added a penalty but two overthrows at the lineout frustrated Newbold and gifted possession to Derby.  This highlighted the importance of a good hooker such as Peter Wilcox, whose accurate throwing ensured secure ball for Derby.  Before the interval Van Wyk and Manning scored tries and Castledine kicked a penalty.  Dan Obrien kicked two penalties for Newbold to keep them in the game trailing by ten points.

After the restart Derby forwards drove forward from a lineout and Louis Hicks got his second try to make things much more difficult for the visitors and signalled the arrival of the three Derby subs.   Newbold winger, Murray ran seventy metres to score a brilliant solo try with a deftly judged chip and chase. Dan Obrien did well to convert from way out but that was as good as it got for Newbold.  Ben Marsden scored two tries in quick succession, the second set up by Ben Marlow.  George Castledine converted both of the tries but Newbold became more frustrated as they desperately wanted a Bonus point.  They took a series of quick penalties but were tackled to a standstill by the Derby defence.
